Rocky Mountain High

If you were to do just one train journey in the USA, the trip from Denver through to Salt Lake City, and possibly on to San Fransisco, would have to be the one. I mean, we come from New Zealand which is well known for its beauty, but we kept pulling our cameras out after we had decided we had enough pics!

The train wound it's way upwards through canyons, snow and ice and then back down again through even more spectacular scenery.

We were surprised at how much snow and ice there was for the time of year, but later found that much of the USA was experiencing a cold spell.

We stopped near a ski resort for a smoker's break, (yes, there were a few of them!) and we certainly experienced the crisp cold air.

We passed through many tunnels, including the Moffat tunnel, which is 6.2 miles long, took 10 minutes to go through, and reaches a height of 9,280ft.

We were amazed at how much flat land there was across the path taken by the train through the Rockies - this is around 9,000ft above sea level, rather different from our mountains!

OK, I guess you've got the idea by now. The train was packed to full capacity, with many more tourists than on the other train trips. It was certainly a highlight of our US trip - one of many of course!
